Dracaena marginata is a member of the ancient dragon tree family and is found growing wild in Mauritius. It’s a beautiful plant, with wonderful sword like leaves. But there is another variety grown for its foliage alone. It’s called Dracaena marginata ‘Tricolor’. The real feature of this plant is its decorative foliage – striped cream, green and pink and it looks absolutely fantastic year round.
It’s a fairly slow growing plant, eventually reaching about 3 to 4 metres. It has bold, dramatic foliage, so it’s best used en masse. In this garden it’s been planted alongside Phormium ‘Yellow Wave’ to provide a brilliant contrast. But it also has a wonderful form that looks great in large tubs on a patio or balcony.
